Chinese Medical Bodywork for Pain, Tension
& Nervous System Restoration

Most people do not realise how much stress the body quietly holds onto until somebody finally works through it properly.
It shows up as tight shoulders that never fully relax. A jaw that stays clenched without noticing. Restless sleep. A body that feels tired but cannot completely switch off. Tui Na is a form of Chinese medical bodywork that works through these patterns in a very different way to conventional massage. Rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, it works not only on muscles and tension, but also through the body’s acupuncture channels, circulation, joints, fascia, and nervous system to help the body move and function more freely again.

A More Thoughtful Approach to Bodywork

At Heal by Acupuncture, treatments are tailored entirely to the individual. Some sessions are more physically therapeutic. Others are deeply calming and regulating. Most are somewhere in between.
The aim is not simply to “work on muscles,” but to understand what the body is holding and what it needs in order to let go of it.

What Makes Tui Na Different?

Unlike many forms of massage, Tui Na is based on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine. This means treatment is not approached as a fixed routine or sequence. Two people with the same pain may receive completely different treatments depending on how their body is presenting overall. Using a combination of:

Acupressure

Back pain, arthritis, migraines, and joint issues.

Rhythmic pressure

Stress, anxiety.

Rolling and kneading techniques

Fertility, menstrual issues, and menopause symptoms.

Stretching

Bloating, IBS, and general gut health.

Mobilisation

Sinus issues, asthma, or seasonal allergies.

Channel-based bodywork

Eczema, acne, or general skin health.

treatment helps improve circulation, release tension, restore movement, and calm the nervous system at the same time. Some areas may feel tender where the body has been tight or stagnant for a long time, but treatment should never feel aggressive or overwhelming.

What Makes Tui Na Different?

Tui Na may support:

  • Neck and shoulder tension
  • Back pain and stiffness
  • Postural strain
  • Sports injuries and recovery
  • Jaw tension and headaches
  • Stress-related tension
  • Fatigue and burnout
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Digestive discomfort linked to stress
  • Restricted movement and muscular tightness
  • General physical and mental overload
Many patients initially come for physical discomfort, but often realise during treatment just how much tension they have been carrying overall.

When Stress Starts Living in the Body

The body adapts remarkably well to stress.
So well, in fact, that many people stop noticing how tense or exhausted they have become. Over time, tension can start to feel “normal.” Breathing becomes shallower. The shoulders stay lifted. Sleep becomes lighter. The nervous system rarely fully settles. Tui Na works through these holding patterns both physically and neurologically, helping the body move out of constant stress mode and into a more restorative state.

Highlight Quote

“Many patients say it is the first time in the week they feel their body properly switch off.”

The Treatment Experience

Each session begins with a short conversation about how you have been feeling physically and mentally, alongside any areas of pain, tightness, stress, or fatigue.
Treatment is then adapted accordingly using a range of Chinese medical bodywork techniques.
Some sessions focus more on muscular release and mobility. Others work more gently to calm the nervous system and support recovery.

Patients often leave feeling:

  • Physically lighter
  • Calmer mentally
  • Less “held” in the body
  • More open in their breathing and movement
  • Deeply rested yet clearer in themselves
Where appropriate, treatment may also be combined with acupuncture, cupping, heat therapy, or other aspects of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

A More Thoughtful Approach to Bodywork

Tui Na is not simply about relaxation, nor is it about forcing the body through pain. It is a treatment approach that works with the body intelligently helping areas that have become tight, depleted, overworked, or stuck begin functioning more smoothly again.
Sometimes the body needs deep release. Sometimes it needs regulation. Often, it needs both.
